Celebrating Black History Month at RCHS

Black History Month Image

Origins of Black History Month

A brief look at the history of African Americans and Black History Month.

Black History Month is an annual celebration of achievements by African Americans and a time for recognizing the central role of blacks in U.S. history. The event grew out of “Negro History Week,” the brainchild of noted historian Carter G. Woodson and other prominent African Americans. Since 1976, every U.S. president has officially designated the month of February as Black History Month. Other countries around the world, including Canada and the United Kingdom, also devote a month to celebrating black history.

The Common Core State Standards Overview

It is that time of year when our students get to showcase their talents in academics. They have taken advantage of class time, PTTS Saturday School, and have also participated in a full practice exams. They are prepared and ready.

In April we begin our CAASPP Smarter Balance Assessments. CAASPP will measure our Junior Class in English as well as Mathematics, and our Seniors will test in Science. Testing dates will be:

  • April 3rd -6th English/Mathematics
  • April 9th -13th English/Mathematics/Science
  • Make up exams administered April 16th-19th Mathematics

In May our heavy hitters are up for the Advanced Placement Exams. Our students began working for this assessment last summer. We will be administering 1,313 exams which is a record amount and they are excited! The schedule for AP Exams:

  • May 7th -18th

Over the next few months our students and staff will be busy during this testing period. Rancho will continue to offer after school peer and teacher tutoring and PTSS Saturday School for added support. Our Library is also open until 3:30pm.

If you have an opportunity, you can see how our school is doing by looking at the California School Dashboard. The California School Dashboard is a component of the Local Control Funding Formula law passed in 2013. It significantly changed how California provides funding to public schools and holds districts accountable for student performance.

The State Board of Education (SBE) adopted this new accountability tool required by LCFF that focuses on 5 state priority areas required by law and 4 local indicators.

Five State Indicators

Indicators allow for comparisons across schools and districts.

  1. High School Graduation Rate
  2. Suspension Rate
  3. English Learner Progress
  4. Progress/ Preparation for College/Career
  5. Chronic Absenteeism

Four Local Indicators

  1. Basics (Teachers, Instructional Materials, facilities)
  2. Implementation of Academic Standards
  3. Parent Engagement
  4. Local Climate Survey

Rancho has earned respect by setting high standards and on-going support to obtain maximum student achievement for every student. It is my honor to work with the tremendous students and staff that make Rancho great! Rancho is proud of its academic success and our expectations for all students are:

  • They will be empowered with knowledge
  • They will be  College and Career ready

We are proud of the fact that each year our students are accepted at some of the most prestigious colleges and universities in the nation.

I am looking forward to seeing you at our events and activities! Follow me on Twitter at @RCHS_Cougars for the latest news.  Stop by and say hello when you see me on campus.

Thank You,

Cary Willborn
Principal RCHS
